The data center stores and processes data and moves it across networks to allow us to access services digitally. They are how we have our everyday digital experiences – from making online payments for goods and services, to booking taxis and private-hires, to streaming music and videos and even applying for PAN or obtaining Tatkaal services. What is inside a data center? + Within every data center are climate-controlled halls containing servers housed on metal racks. The servers will be connected to the wider internet through networking equipment such as cables and switches so that you can access the store information or process it very quickly. The climate-controlled halls ensure that the servers are run safely by keeping them cool. For example, through a closed-loop liquid cooling system that allows for the same cooling liquid to circulate repeatedly and carry heat away from the equipment. To ensure that there is no disruption to the services, there are also backup power systems that can temporarily step in during an unplanned power outage or during servicing downtime. Why are data centers needed? + Data centers are the backbone of today’s digital economy, much like roads and power grids are the backbone of physical infrastructure. Data centers enable you to work online, shop online, process bank payment safely online, teach and learn online, reach out to new customers for your digital businesses online, and listen and connect to others online. Every one of these experiences depends on data being stored and processed in data centers. Data centers need to have enough capacity to keep pace with public demand for digital services. Why do data centers need water? + Data centers need water mostly for the same purposes that other large buildings do, such as landscaping and washrooms. All AdaniConneX data centers in India use air cooling equipment like large fans or air-conditioning units to keep the servers cool, not water. For example, the data center we are building in Visakhapatnam will be air-cooled and will not use water for cooling nor generate any wastewater from cooling. Why do data centers need electricity? + Data centers need electricity for the servers to store and process data, for the networks to send the data to you and for the cooling systems to keep the equipment safe. Do data centers cause air, noise and water pollution? + AdaniConneX data centers do not cause air, water or noise pollution. They use air cooling and closed-loop liquid, so no dangerous chemicals are used and no waste is created. The business has a zero waste to landfill policy. The data center buildings are insulated and excellently designed to ensure heat from the operation of the stacked servers and the low noise from their operation, does not affect neighbors and complies with local regulations. Do data centers disadvantage local people to make people overseas richer? Do data centers make electricity more expensive for ordinary people? + No, they do not. Our data centers are connected to their own dedicated high-voltage infrastructure and billed under a separate industrial or commercial power tariff, set by the relevant energy regulator or negotiated directly between the power supplier and the data center owner, so they do not tap into a residential infrastructure. This means that the data center pays for the additional electricity it uses without simply adding it to the household electricity bill and adds more generation capacity to the grid, which makes it more stable. Do data centers only serve people overseas? + No, they serve people in India too.  Every person making an applying online for an Aadhar or PAN card, or for a new passport, booking a flight ticket, or buying new clothes from an online retailer, or who goes to hospitals and clinics for medical services is using the digital infrastructure of our nation. Businesses in India also rely on data centers when applying for licenses from the government or connecting to their customers or obtaining financial services to receive and make payment. They serve to catapult the whole local and regional technology ecosystem forward by providing access to high-powered compute, which will spark economic growth, and new and expanded business opportunities that will create new jobs. They also create jobs for people who design, build, supply to and operate them and their supporting infrastructure and utilities like new electricity transmission lines. Data centers also benefit the many people who want and need faster data processing to make their lives and businesses run more efficiently.
